AIMEN Technology Center has been selected as one of the six exceptional nominees of the Ruggero Bertani European Geothermal Innovation Awards 2021 with the “Corrosion monitoring probe for geothermal facilities” project.

Their novel electrochemical-based sensors were designed to continuously monitor even tiny changes of corrosion inside the piping systems in real time, long before any visible damage arise, thus preventing hazardous future failures. They can capture not only uniform corrosion but also localised events inside wells and piping systems, which are difficult to be detected. They are also very precise, as they provide direct information instead of a mere indication.

Besides, these sensors can detect changes on the electrolyte resistivity due to the onset of inorganic deposits. Therefore, they can prevent failures and minimise plant shutdowns. The sensors also provide a quantitative data about the quality of the monitored coating/ material, thus can be used to examine the condition of geothermal assets. This data corresponds to the actual corrosion rate (mm/year) of the material.

Thanks to these remarkable characteristics, AIMEN’s electrochemical-based sensors can contribute to an overall extension of the power plant’s life and a reduction of the Operation and Maintenance cost. This cancontribute toboosting the deployment of geothermal energy and therefore a to reducing CO2 emissions.

The winner of this year edition will be announced in Spring 2021.
