Energy Efficiency Directive 2022 recast – EGEC Position Paper

Geothermal heating, cooling, permanent electricity supply, underground thermal storage and sustainable lithium extraction are critical contributors to energy efficiency improvements and the achievement of the EU’s 2030 and 2050 targets for energy efficiency and climate change mitigation.


The following priorities have been identified to unlock the efficiency potential of renewable energy deployment:

• Capacity building, with a specific focus on local authorities, for integrated energy efficiency and renewable energy development
• Towards an efficient use of renewable energy
• Consistency of the EED with the EPBD building decarbonisation objective and the Renewable Energy Directive Article 23 and 16.
• Lock fossil fuels out of the energy efficiency directive, including natural gas
