High level politicians at European level, CEOs from market actors, and representatives from the geothermal sector will meet in Berlin for the European Geothermal Congress.

All of Europe is going through an energy crisis right now that will turn into a heat crisis as the outside temperatures get colder. This makes it more important than ever to find a solution for emission free energy. The European Geothermal Congress wants to be a part of the solution. The program was put together by experts in the field and will highlight four main topics: Geothermal solutions for the future renewable energy systems, Policy & Markets, Technology & Innovation, and Research & Development. The congress is a unique opportunity to bring together not only representatives from all over Europe but also from different fields: high level politicians, renowned scientists and industry leaders, some of which will speak at the welcome ceremony.

The welcome ceremony will be moderated by the presidents of the two co-organisers of the congress: Miklos Antics from the EGEC and Helge-Uve Braun from the BVG. The German representative Dr. Julia Verlinden from the German Parliament, followed by Mr. Christian Maass from the Ministry for Economics and Climate Action Germany, Mr. Ajit Menon, Vice President Geothermal of Baker Hughes, the main sponsor of the congress, will all give welcome statements.

The second part of the opening ceremony, from a local to European approach, will begin with a speech by Mrs Silke Karcher from the City of Berlin, followed by Mr. Olivier Racle, ENGIE Head of District Heating and Cooling and Mr. Felix Koselleck, STRABAG AG Managing Director. The third session will include Mr. Piotr Dziadzio from the Poland State Secretary, Vice Minister in the Ministry of Climate and Environment State, followed by Prof. Dr. Ingo Sass from GfZ and Prof. Dr. Rolf Bracke from Fraunhofer IEG who will provide a national perspective. Finally, to conclude Mr. Paolo Bertuzzi, CEO of TURBODEN and Mr. John Redfern, President and CEO of Eavor will share their insights.

“In Poland, we have taken a comprehensive approach to dynamizing the use of the Earth’s heat. A holistic concept for the use of geothermal energy in our country was presented in the strategic document entitled Multi-Year Program for the Development of the use of Geothermal Resources In Poland (the so-called Road Map for Geothermal Development in Poland), developed at the initiative of the Ministry of Climate and Environment. We have planned a series of measures, taking into account the use of the potential of shallow geothermal energy as well as low-, medium- and high-temperature geothermal energy, the storage of thermal energy in the rock mass, the minimization of investment risks in geothermal projects, research work and the implementation of innovative technologies, and the introduction of necessary legislative changes.

Such a comprehensive approach and systematization of the directions of development makes it possible to carry out large-scale undertakings financed from public funds, as well as pro-development activities such as research works and pilot projects conducted by Polish research and scientific institutions.” Piotr Dziadzio, Vice Minister, Ministry of Climate and Environment State, Poland
