The biggest geothermal event in Europe just ended with impressive results: over 1200 participants gathered in Zurich for a week packed with presentations, networking, site visits and an exciting exhibition with more than 40 organizations represented.
In the words of Miklos Antics, newly re-elected President of EGEC, the European Geothermal Congress is “the beating heart” of the geothermal movement in the continent.
On Thursday (9 of October), during the closing session, participants discovered the new location for the next edition of the Congress: Budapest, Hungary.
The 2028 European Geothermal Congress will be organized in partnership with SARA – the Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs.

The Geothermal District Heating and Cooling Days will take place from 20-22 of May to bring together key players and experts in the heating and cooling space across Europe.
The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) welcomes eagerly awaited confirmation from the European Commission that the Geothermal Action Plan will be published in Q1 2026.[1]
Dan Jørgensen, Commissioner for Energy and Housing, acknowledged, in a written response to a question from Davor Stier MEP[2], that ”geothermal energy has an important role to play in the decarbonisation of the EU’s energy system”. He added, “The potential of geothermal energy has been so far hindered by challenges related inter alia to planning, permitting, skills, financing and availability of data”.
