Horizon 2020 is the EU’s main resource to support research and development. The facility makes EUR 80 billion available to research or demonstration projects over the 2014-2020 period. It is structured around several priority axes to which submitted projects must correspond to benefit from funding. These axes include:
– Reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint;
– Low-cost, low-carbon electricity supply;
– Alternative fuels and mobile energy sources;
– A single, smart European electricity grid;
– New knowledge and technologies;
– Robust decision making and public engagement;
– Market uptake of energy and ICT innovation.
Geothermal energy projects may also be eligible to call for projects that are not directly energy related, for instance in the “Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies” WP or in the “nanotechnology” one.
Horizon 2020 awards support in the form of grants through competitive bids for tenders for each project. The calls are published regularly on the facility’s Participant portal.
For the period 2021-2027, a new programme, Horizon Europe, will continue the role of H2020 as the core programme for providing research and innovation funding in Europe. Unlike its predecessor, Horizon Europe will be structured around some overarching missions, encompassing wide priorities of the EU with the aim to have a more transversal approach to issues.
